61 Chevrolet Recall Statistics: U.S. Campaigns, Trends and Costs

Chevrolet recall statistics are best read in the context of the broader U.S. recall system. NHTSA’s annual figures cover all makes unless a series is explicitly labeled otherwise, while GM’s financial disclosures cover the consolidated company rather than Chevrolet alone.

Key Chevrolet Recall Statistics

The most broadly useful figures span campaign volume, affected populations, urgency, timing and cost:

U.S. Chevrolet Recall Context and Affected Populations

NHTSA’s affected-population measure means vehicles potentially affected by recall campaigns, not vehicles that were repaired. The annual totals below therefore describe the scale of campaigns, not completed remedies, and they are national figures across the U.S. recall system.

Year All recall types Vehicle-only recalls
2020 883 recalls; 56,228,619 vehicles 737 recalls; 51,820,833 vehicles
2021 1,093 recalls; 34,804,228 vehicles 896 recalls; 31,857,330 vehicles
2022 1,050 recalls; 32,141,648 vehicles 850 recalls; 23,221,422 vehicles
2023 1,000 recalls; 39,783,137 vehicles 792 recalls; 32,447,979 vehicles
2024 1,073 recalls; 35,000,618 vehicles 800 recalls; 25,178,523 vehicles

Across the longer vehicle-only series, NHTSA reported 14,364 campaigns affecting 698,550,428 vehicles from 2004 through 2024. That period total provides historical scale, but it should not be interpreted as the number of unique vehicles or completed repairs.

Chevrolet Recall Data: Defect and Compliance Campaigns

NHTSA separates defect recalls from compliance recalls. The distinction describes campaign classification, not a ranking of safety severity, and both measures remain broader than Chevrolet alone.

Year Defect recalls and affected vehicles Compliance recalls and affected vehicles
2020 832; 33,459,342 51; 22,769,277
2021 1,042; 23,921,592 51; 10,882,636
2022 1,017; 28,874,257 33; 3,267,391
2023 964; 31,015,473 36; 8,767,664
2024 1,029; 27,682,450 44; 7,318,168

The five-year data shows why campaign counts and affected populations need to be read together. For example, 2020 had 51 compliance recalls affecting 22,769,277 vehicles, while 2024 had 44 compliance recalls affecting 7,318,168 vehicles; fewer campaigns do not necessarily mean a proportionally smaller campaign population in another year.

Influenced and Uninfluenced Recall Populations

NHTSA also reports influenced and uninfluenced categories within defect and compliance recalls. These labels belong to the agency’s reporting framework; the figures below do not measure owner participation or the share of vehicles repaired.

  • In 2020, 696 uninfluenced defect recalls affected 29,171,945 vehicles, while 41 influenced defect recalls affected 22,648,888 vehicles.
  • In 2020, 136 uninfluenced compliance recalls affected 4,287,397 vehicles, while 10 influenced compliance recalls affected 120,389 vehicles.
  • In 2021, 860 uninfluenced defect recalls affected 21,368,950 vehicles, while 36 influenced defect recalls affected 10,488,380 vehicles.
  • In 2021, 182 uninfluenced compliance recalls affected 2,552,642 vehicles, while 15 influenced compliance recalls affected 394,256 vehicles.
  • In 2022, 834 uninfluenced defect recalls affected 21,318,436 vehicles, while 16 influenced defect recalls affected 1,902,986 vehicles.
  • In 2022, 183 uninfluenced compliance recalls affected 7,555,821 vehicles, while 17 influenced compliance recalls affected 1,364,405 vehicles.
  • In 2023, 766 uninfluenced defect recalls affected 23,942,649 vehicles, while 26 influenced defect recalls affected 8,505,330 vehicles.
  • In 2023, 198 uninfluenced compliance recalls affected 7,072,824 vehicles, while 10 influenced compliance recalls affected 262,334 vehicles.
  • In 2024, 770 uninfluenced defect recalls affected 18,140,553 vehicles, while 30 influenced defect recalls affected 7,037,970 vehicles.
  • In 2024, 259 uninfluenced compliance recalls affected 9,541,897 vehicles, while 14 influenced compliance recalls affected 280,198 vehicles.

The recent trend has different peaks depending on whether the measure is campaign count or affected population. The highest all-type count was 1,093 recalls in 2021, whereas the largest all-type affected population was 56,228,619 vehicles in 2020.

NHTSA reported the all-type population at 35,000,618 vehicles in 2024, compared with 56,228,619 in 2020. For vehicle-only recalls, the corresponding reported populations were 25,178,523 in 2024 and 51,820,833 in 2020; both comparisons are derived from the two reported annual totals and are not Chevrolet-specific.

The annual table also shows a rebound in all-type affected vehicles in 2023 to 39,783,137, followed by 35,000,618 in 2024. Because these are campaign populations rather than unique owners or repaired vehicles, they should not be converted into participation rates.

EV-Component Recalls and Urgent Advisories

NHTSA’s EV-component series covers recalls of EV-specific components on pure-electric or hybrid vehicles. It is not a count of all recalls involving an electrified vehicle and is not a Chevrolet-only series.

Year EV-component recalls Affected vehicles
2020 74 2,911,154
2021 56 566,584
2022 39 1,311,920
2023 19 156,568
2024 12 365,183

Urgent consumer advisories identify a different dimension of recall impact. From 2020 through 2024, 4,752,050 vehicles were subject to do-not-drive advisories, and 1,332,486 were subject to park-outside-away-from-structures advisories, both in the United States.

Recall Remedy Timing and GM Costs

NHTSA’s remedy-timing series reports how long it took for a final remedy to become available across U.S. vehicle recalls from 2020 through 2024. It does not state that every affected vehicle received that remedy within the interval.

Final remedy availability Recalls Share
Under two months 711 16%
Two to six months 3,514 79%
Six to 12 months 199 4%
More than one year 40 1%

GM’s financial figures provide company-wide cost context rather than a Chevrolet ledger. The General Motors Company 2024 Form 10-K reported recall-campaign warranties issued or assumed of $997 million in 2024, compared with $864 million in 2023 and $651 million in 2022.

At December 31, 2024, GM reported a $10.571 billion product-warranty and related-liability balance. That consolidated balance includes product warranty and recall-related liabilities and is not Chevrolet-only.

GM also disclosed an estimate that a 10% increase in the estimated recall take rate would raise estimated cost by approximately $0.4 billion. This is a sensitivity estimate in GM’s 2024 Form 10-K, not an observed cash outlay, and it applies to GM on a consolidated basis.
