Pontiac Sales Statistics Before the Brand Wind-Down

GM’s U.S. delivery tables show Pontiac vehicle deliveries falling during January–September 2008. The measure is dealer deliveries, not production, registrations, surviving vehicles or total global Pontiac sales.

U.S. Pontiac delivery measure Jan–Sep 2008 Jan–Sep 2007 Change
All vehicles 225,708 276,589 -18.4%
Cars 208,790 249,127 -16.2%
Light trucks 16,918 27,462 -38.4%

September 2008 was weaker than the year-to-date comparison. Pontiac delivered 23,324 vehicles, including 21,838 cars and 1,486 light trucks; these were declines of 26.7%, 23.0% and 56.8%, respectively, from September 2007.

The light-truck total represented about 7.5% of Pontiac’s January–September 2008 deliveries, while the September light-truck figure represented about 6.4% of that month’s Pontiac deliveries. These are derived shares from the same GM table, not reported GM percentages.

The 2009 monthly releases show the contraction continuing. April had 26 selling days in both comparison periods, and the figures remain dealer-delivery comparisons.

All vehicles 10,838 24,009 -54.9%

From January through April 2009, Pontiac delivered 51,725 vehicles, down 46.3% from 96,386 in the same 2008 period. Cars totaled 46,952, down 46.8% from 88,253, while light trucks totaled 4,773, down 41.3% from 8,133.

May brought 12,232 Pontiac vehicle deliveries, down 53.6% from 26,340 in May 2008. The January–May total was 59,184, down 48.4% from 114,593; cars accounted for 11,135 in May and 54,414 year to date, while light trucks accounted for 1,097 and 5,870.

Source: Sales Release and Charts dated June 2, 2009. May car deliveries were down 55.7% for the month and 49.2% year to date; light trucks were down 32.5% and 39.9% on the same measures.

Pontiac Car Statistics by Model and Period

The April 2009 GM table gives both monthly and calendar year-to-date model delivery counts. Pontiac cars totaled 9,825 in April and 46,952 from January through April.

Pontiac model April 2009 Jan–Apr 2009 Change in comparable period
G3 Wave 197 418 No 2008 comparator reported
G5 441 2,454 April -78.3%; YTD -66.9%
G6 4,750 25,261 April -57.6%; YTD -55.8%
G8 2,013 8,988 April -5.3%; YTD +209.6%
Grand Prix 16 181 April -98.9%; YTD -96.3%
Solstice 337 1,206 April -70.8%; YTD -69.4%
Vibe 2,071 8,444 April -53.1%; YTD -29.6%

The G6 was the largest listed Pontiac car by both measures, with 4,750 April deliveries and 25,261 through April. The G8’s year-to-date increase should be read alongside its low 2008 base: its 8,988 deliveries were compared with 2,903 in January–April 2008.

Other model declines were steep. Grand Prix deliveries fell to 16 in April and 181 year to date, from 1,487 and 4,837 in the corresponding 2008 periods; the Solstice and Vibe also recorded lower deliveries in both comparisons.

Pontiac Light-Truck Statistics and Mix

Pontiac’s light-truck category was smaller than its car category in every period reported here. GM classified 1,013 Pontiac light trucks in April 2009 and 4,773 from January through April, followed by 1,097 in May and 5,870 from January through May.

Period Light-truck deliveries Year-over-year change
September 2008 1,486 -56.8%
January–September 2008 16,918 -38.4%
April 2009 1,013 -36.7%
January–April 2009 4,773 -41.3%
May 2009 1,097 -32.5%
January–May 2009 5,870 -39.9%

Light trucks were about 9.3% of Pontiac’s April 2009 deliveries, calculated as 1,013 divided by 10,838. That share is a same-table derived figure, not a published market-share statistic.

Pontiac Model Deliveries in April 2009

April’s model counts show how concentrated Pontiac’s deliveries were among a few nameplates. The G6 recorded 4,750 deliveries, the Vibe 2,071 and the G8 2,013; the remaining listed models each recorded fewer than 500 deliveries.

  • The G3 Wave recorded 197 April deliveries and 418 from January through April 2009.
  • The G5 recorded 441 April deliveries and 2,454 from January through April 2009.
  • The G6 recorded 4,750 April deliveries and 25,261 from January through April 2009.
  • The G8 recorded 2,013 April deliveries and 8,988 from January through April 2009.
  • The Solstice recorded 337 April deliveries and 1,206 from January through April 2009.
  • The Vibe recorded 2,071 April deliveries and 8,444 from January through April 2009.

Pontiac Delivery Statistics at the End of the Brand

By February 2010, Pontiac deliveries were near the end of the brand’s wind-down. U.S. Pontiac deliveries were 84 in February 2010, down 99.4% from 14,200 in February 2009, and January–February 2010 deliveries totaled 473, down 98.0% from 23,304 in the same 2009 period.

U.S. delivery measure Pontiac GM total Pontiac compared with GM total
February 2010 84 141,951 About 0.06%
January–February 2010 473 288,776 About 0.16%

Source: Sales Release and Charts Dated March 2, 2010. The comparisons use GM’s total deliveries in the same release and are not Pontiac market shares of all U.S. vehicle sales.

The February 2010 Pontiac figure is therefore best understood as a residual delivery count during the wind-down, not as a measure of the remaining Pontiac vehicle population. The same caution applies to the January–February total: it compares Pontiac with GM, not with the complete U.S. market.

For safety-data context, NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System is a census of fatal motor-vehicle traffic crashes in the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico from 1975 to the present. A Pontiac-specific FARS count would describe Pontiac vehicles involved in qualifying fatal crashes, not all Pontiac owners, and no such count is stated here.
